Maria Rodriguez was born in Queens and moved to Puerto Rico as a baby. She moved to Buffalo after living in San Diego where her husband was stationed and where she learned how to cook from her mother and grandmother. In 1993, Maria packed up her car and drove with her husband and three children from San Diego, to Buffalo, where they had hoped to make a fresh start. After receiving a microloan from Westminster Economic Development, Maria was able to open Kiosko Latino, a Puerto Rican and Mexican restaurant in the West Side Bazaar, a WEDI initiative.
