Executive Staff

Carolynn Welch (she/her)
Executive Director
Carolynn was born and raised in Buffalo and has enjoyed watching it become an even better place to live over the years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from D’Youville University. Carolynn has worked at WEDI since 2017 and was appointed executive director in 2019. Prior to WEDI, she worked at various nonprofits for 20+ years in areas including program management, development, compliance, and administration. In September 2022, Carolynn received the Delta Sigma Alumni Award from D'Youville University. In her free time she enjoys reading. She lives in Hamburg with her three children.

Development and Communications Team

Cody Clement-Sanders (he/him)
Director of Operations
Cody has lived in Buffalo for 10 years. He holds multiple degrees from the University at Buffalo including a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design with a minor in Geography and a Masters of Urban Planning with dual specializations in Neighborhood Planning and Community Development and Economic Development and International Planning. Prior to working at WEDI, Cody interned for Joule Assets. He serves on the board of the King Urban Life Center where he is the chair of the Restoration Committee. In his free time he enjoys playing video games and ultimate frisbee, hiking, working on cars, and tinkering away at greasy mechanical projects. He lives with his girlfriend. Cody was named WEDI's Employee of the Month in June 2021.

Katherine has lived in Buffalo since 2015. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from SUNY Purchase. Prior to WEDI, Katherine worked as a freelance writer for newspapers, magazines, and blogs and also as a salesperson for Brady Corporation in Williamsville, NY. In her spare time, Katherine enjoys being outdoors, gardening, traveling, listening to music, and cooking. She lives with her boyfriend, her best friend, and three cats. Katherine was named WEDI's Employee of the Month in August 2022 and WEDI's Employee of the Year for 2022.

Erin St. John Kelly (she/her)
Director of External Relations
Erin moved to Buffalo from New York City in 2010. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science with an English minor from Concordia University. Laura Munson (she/her)
Capital Campaign Manager
Born in Dayton, OH, Laura moved to Buffalo from Pittsburgh, PA when she was in the third grade and considers Buffalo her true home. She received her bachelor's degree in French and Music from Denison University. Prior to WEDI, she worked at the Canadian Consulate in Buffalo as the Bilingual Commercial Assistant and then as its Director of IT. After many years there, she became the Director of Admissions at her high school alma mater. Laura has two daughters in college, and she lives in Buffalo with her husband and her rambunctious Scottish Terrier named Winston. In her spare time, she enjoys live music, gardening, and running after her kids. Laura was named WEDI's Employee of the Month in February 2023.

Economic Development Team

Catherine Dolan (she/her)
Economic Development Director
Catherine lives in the area. She received a bachelor’s degree in Management and a master’s degree in Psychology. Prior to WEDI, Catherine worked in finance and sales. She has volunteered as a cheer coach and with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She is a single mother of two boys.

A native of Canada, Cristen holds a bachelor’s degree in Voice Performance from University of Toronto, a master’s degree in Business Administration from Medaille College, and she has earned an international designation as a Certified Volunteer Administrator (CVA). Prior to WEDI, she worked as the executive director of many arts organizations and served as a chair and/or member of numerous nonprofit boards. She also teaches How to Run a Non-Profit and Voice classes at Canisius College, acts as a certified holistic nutritionist/health and wellness coach, performs music all over the world, and teaches voice. She lives in Buffalo with her husband.

In her free time Eboni enjoys bowling, playing skee ball, and promoting healthy living through exercise and eating. She lives in Buffalo with her daughter and cat.

Purnima has lived in Buffalo for 15 years. She holds bachelor’s degrees in Chemistry and Food & Fermentation Technology from the University of Mumbai, India. Prior to WEDI, she worked for Rich Products and Coca Cola India. Purnima has volunteered with numerous nonprofits and serves as the co-president of her PTSA Council. In her free time she enjoys arts and crafts, singing, dancing, cooking, photography, and volunteering. She lives in Amherst with her husband and son. Purnima was named WEDI's Employee of the Month in January 2022.

Prior to WEDI, Mike worked for the Buffalo State Student Union, the University of Northern Iowa, and the Campus Center at University at Albany. He is very involved in Buffalo's music industry where he programs acts for a music venue, owns a music blog, and releases local music through his own record label. Underwriter
Katrina was born and raised in Buffalo, NY. She has a bachelor’s degree in Finance and an associate’s degree in Accounting from the University of the Pacific. With over 15 years of experience in financial institutions and credit unions, Katrina brings extensive knowledge working with internal and external customers to provide lending and financial services. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, working out, and focuses on self-care and self-improvement.

Esperance moved to Buffalo as a refugee in 2005 and considers it her home. She holds an associate degree in Business Administration from Erie Community College, a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Medaille College, and a master’s degree in Public Administration from Buffalo State College. Prior to working at WEDI, Esperance provided services to people with mental health issues and their families. In her free time she enjoys traveling and spending time with family. She lives with her husband and four children. Esperance was named WEDI's Employee of the Month in May 2022.

Helping under-represented business entrepreneurs secure funding to begin their journey gives me a sense of pride. I am a woman, a minority, and came to the United States as a refugee so I can relate to my clients. I know what it means to start from scratch, to have an idea and a dream, but to need a little help to make it a reality. Seeing how beneficial my work is to the individuals and the larger community gives me joy!”

Yanush Sanmugaraja (he/him)
Senior Director, Economic Development
Yanush has lived in Western New York since 2016. He holds a bachelor’s of arts degree with studies in sociology and economics from SUNY Geneseo. Yanush started working at WEDI as an economic development specialist and is now the senior director of economic development. Prior to WEDI, he worked in digital sales, marketing, and media for various companies and nonprofits. He has served on the boards of and/or volunteered for People for Animal Welfare, Hearthside Cats, Inc., and AmeriCorps (through The Service Collaborative). In his free time he enjoys spending time with his pets and being outdoors in warmer weather. Yanush has been recognized by the John R. Oishei Foundation and named to its Fellowship for Leaders of Color in October 2020. He was named WEDI's Employee of the Month in November 2021. In March 2022, Yanush was awarded Buffalo Business First's 30 under 30.

Yanush has lived in Western New York since 2016. He holds a bachelor’s of arts degree with studies in sociology and economics from SUNY Geneseo. Yanush started working at WEDI as an economic development specialist and is now the senior director of economic development. Prior to WEDI, he worked in digital sales, marketing, and media for various companies and nonprofits. He has served on the boards of and/or volunteered for People for Animal Welfare, Hearthside Cats, Inc., and AmeriCorps (through The Service Collaborative). In his free time he enjoys spending time with his pets and being outdoors in warmer weather. Yanush has been recognized by the John R. Oishei Foundation and named to its Fellowship for Leaders of Color in October 2020. He was named WEDI's Employee of the Month in November 2021. In March 2022, Yanush was awarded Buffalo Business First's 30 under 30.

Ryan was born in Buffalo. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Mercyhurst University and a master’s degree from Pennsylvania State University. Prior to working at WEDI, he was an AmeriCorps service member at the City of Buffalo, Division of Citizen Services. In his free time, he enjoys playing soccer.

Nicholas is originally from Eden, NY. He received his bachelor’s degree in Public Communication and master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from SUNY Buffalo State College. Prior to WEDI, Nicholas worked as Events and Operations Manager at Campbell Student Union at Buffalo State and as a project manager of an e-commerce marketing team. In his spare time, he plays guitar in several local bands, such as Cooler and Genesee Hotel, and writes for buffaBLOG, a music blog. He lives on Buffalo’s West Side with his wife and two cats, Vivi and Krillin.
